About the library
The Central Library of the Hungarian National Museum was founded in 1952. The composition and size of its collections make it one of the most important sources of archaeological literature in the Central Danubian Basin. The original Archaeological Library was later expanded with collections of Conservation of Art and Contemporary History. It currently holds nearly 280,000 volumes and readers have access to online databases and periodicals as well. The library's basic collection, the original Archaeological Library, contains primarily specialized works related to the Carpathian Basin region. It is also a major source of foreign language books and journals. The Conservation of Art Collection supports the restoration of archaeological finds and museum objects, as well as the various levels of restorer training and museum work. The Contemporary History Collection, which serves primarily for exhibition purposes, contains various documentary publications (eg. party programs, publications of public and other institutions, organizations), historical monographs, works of fiction, miscellaneous journals and other documents characteristic to the age.
Our library is located in the building of the National Museum, in the premises of the former Széchényi Library. It has been a public special library since 2005. Membership is free of charge for every adult Hungarian and foreign citizen.
